Review: Enchant by Micalea Smeltzer

Enchant
By: Micalea Smeltzer

Series: Enchanted Series
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: 291 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

Mara Pryce never imagined that her life was anything but normal and then a strange gray-eyed young man appears at her graduation. When he vanishes without a trace, she’s convinced he’s a figment of her imagination. Then he appears again and shatters her whole world.

Mara is an enchanter, part of an ancient line of Wiccan power, and a war is raging—one of good and evil—between the Enchanted and the Iniquitous.

The Iniquitous want her dead and it’s Theodore’s job as her protector to keep her safe.

When Mara and Theodore arrive at a safe house, where Mara will remain hidden while learning about her powers, they find that the real threat might be a little closer to home than they want to believe.

My Review:

Rating:

***I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.***

Harry Potter meets The Mortal Instruments!!

This book combines the best of both worlds; magic, witches, an evil group that breaks away from the good and a hidden institute. What more could on ask for in a book?

This book started out with so much promise, it had me hooked from the very first page. I had high hopes and was sadly disappointed in the end.

Mara believed she was just a normal teenage girl until a strange man started following her around her small town. Then one night her entire world is turned upside down and she is thrust into a world of magic with an annoying man that claims to be her protector.

We are swept into a world of magic and enchanters, and Mara finds out she has a mysterious destiny that no one will tell her about. I couldn't wait to see where the story took us, however the deeper I got into the story I found it to be under developed, both the characters and the storyline.

I loved the relationship between Mara and Theo, however I feel as though the author could have explored that relationship a bit more. Why is their love so forbidden? Who is Theo really? While we got a bit of a background story I felt it lacked in describing this character in front of us. How exactly is a protector chosen? Who are the Chosen?

I felt like there were so many unanswered questions. Characters were introduced but never really explored. I felt as the the author could have ventured down so many different roads if only there had been more dialogue or if Mara had spent time with people other than Adelaide and Theo. Also, many of the scenes throughout the book seemed short and almost appeared to end abruptly, leaving you wondering.

I did enjoy the story, especially since it shared so many aspects similar to Harry Potter and The Mortal Instruments; magic, witches, and a secret institute. I had only wish that the book was longer with a bit more detail and that the characters were a bit more developed. I think if the book was a bit longer the story would seem more developed and less rushed.

I do plan to finish the series to see ho everything ends, especially after the ending we got in book one. While this book wasn't my favorite it was not terrible, I just think it lacked some development to take it over the edge.

Review: Doctor Who: Myths and Legends by Richard Dinnick

Doctor Who: Myths and Legends
By: Richard Dinnick
Illustrated by: Adrian Salmon

Synopsis From Goodreads:

For thousands of years, epic stories have been passed down from Time Lord to student, generation to generation. The truth of these tales was lost millennia ago, but the myths and legends themselves are timeless.

These are the most enduring of those tales. From the princess Manussa and her giant snake Mara, to the Vardon Horse of Xeriphin, these stories shed light on the universe around us and the beings from other worlds that we meet. Myths hold up a mirror to our past, present and future, explaining our culture, our history, our hopes and fears.

A collection of epic adventures from the Time Lords’ mist-covered past, Myths and Legends is an unforgettable gallery of heroes and villains, gods and monsters.

***I received this copy via NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.***

I must be honest I have never watched a single episode of Doctor Who, I know that is a crime to many. However, I have never really been interested in sci-fi shows or books. However, my sister is a huge fan and absolutely loves everything Doctor Who.

My main purpose for signing up to receive a copy of this book was to see what the hook was and why my sister was so obsessed. And I must say I am glad I gave this book a chance. I may have to cave and watch the show now. :)

I didn't have very high hopes when going into this book. I've never been a fan of sci-fi books and being as I have never seen the show I had a feeling I was going to struggle with identifying characters and places. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy the stories were to follow. I contribute that the the remarkable writing skills of Richard Dinnick and the illustrations of Adrain Salmon. The illustrations made it easy to put a face to the name or even the alien species.

This book is a compilation of short stories depicting the lives of previous Time Lords. It showed the world of Gallifrey, before it's demise and the many struggles they endured to keep Gallifrey alive. I enjoyed following the Time Lords from one adventure to the next. It was great how each story was separate on it's own but in the end most of them all came together to depict the story of the Gallifrey President Rassilon and his many encounters.

I am truly happy that I gave this book a chance and was given the opportunity to read this title. I would definitely recommend this book, even if you have not seen the show. The author and illustrator make it easy to follow the stories, even if you have no idea who many of the characters are.

Review: Falsies by Olive East

Falsies
By: Olive East

Series: The Makeup Series
Genre: New Adult Romance
Length: 314 pages

Synopsis From Goodreads:

When Brooks walks into my life, I can’t keep from wanting him. He’s perfection—a sexy veterinary student who knows how to cook and always cheers me up when I’m down. But I don’t deserve a man like him. There’s a darkness in me that no one could ever love, and I know he’ll abandon me, just like everyone I’ve ever cared about. Just like my father. I wouldn’t be able to stand that hurt, so I push him away.

Then my ex comes back. He betrayed me before, but now he says he wants to make me feel whole again. I know it isn’t right, and I shouldn’t let him into my life. But all I want is to recapture the happiness I once had. But sometimes those who want to fix things leave you more broken, and some friends turn out to be false. How can you tell true love from a lie?

My Review:

Rating:

***I received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.***

First, I must say that this book was beautifully written and that Olive East is a phenomenal author. However, this book just wasn't my cup of tea. I had a hard time connecting with the main character, Ollie, finding her annoying and extremely self-destructive. She complained about everything and had a very poor self-image. I had hoped that she would find new strength after connecting with Brooks, but she only seemed to spiral out of control.

I had wished Brooks' character had been more developed. I felt like his character was lacking and found it hard to connect with him. Due to the lack of development among the two main characters, I never felt like their relationship was strong. I never truly felt connected to Ollie and Brooks, making it hard for me to root for their relationship.

The antagonists, Sadie and Aaron got on my nerves from the very beginning and I could not understand why Ollie would surround herself with such horrible people. I was waiting for her to blow up at Sadie and rid herself of such a negative being. But that conflict never truly came. When it did I was highly disappointed and had hoped Ollie would stand up for herself instead of taking the bullying and mean comments coming from Sadie.

I had hoped for a bit more depth to the story, however most of the book consisted of Ollie moping and trying to destroy the first good thing in her life since her dad's death. After awhile it simply got old and I was tired of reading her depressing and self-destructive thoughts.

The cover and description of this book is what truly drew me to the book, however I can't say I would recommend this book. It was definitely a struggle for me to finish. :(

Review: Through the Zombie Glass by Gena Showalter

My Review:

Rating:

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SERIES!! CAN"T GET ENOUGH!!

Gena Showalter is a remarkable author, she has definitely moved to my favorite author list. She has a way of writing that captivates you and makes it easy to connect with each and every one of the characters, whether they are major or minor. The writing is so beautifully spun together that you feel as though you have been transported into the middle of a zombie battle yourself.

With Alice in Zombieland, I was hooked from the very first page, however with this book I had a hard time staying focused and getting absorbed into the story. Through the Zombie Glass started off slower and was missing some of that gripping mystery I so loved in the first book. However, has I got further into the story, the mysteries started to unfold and the need to know what was going to happen kept me trucking through and I can honestly say I was not disappointed.

I enjoyed that new characters were brought into the story, Gavin and Veronica. They stirred things up between Cole and Alice, adding to the storyline.

Alice's visions were gone or so she thought until Gavin walks into her line of sight, only to upset the relationship between Cole and Alice. Leading to Cole turning to an old romance. As much as I hated their break up, I felt it was necessary in order for both characters to grow. Their separation made them stronger as a duo.

Even so, Alice has more important things to worry about, than her broken relationship with Cole. Something is wrong with her, the hunger and angry is getting stronger and she needs to find a way to stop the monster inside her before its too late.

I loved the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde twist to Alice's character. Discovering the mysteries behind how this all happened to her and why Anima wanted her, is what pulled me back in after the slow beginning.

This series is phenomenal and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. Fairytale retellings are some of my favorite books to read and this retelling has an amazing plot twist, with zombies and slayers. I would definitely recommend this series!! I can't get enough of these books and think an Amazon purchase is in my future. :)
