My Review:

Rating:

My sister got to meet Veronica Roth when we went to YallFest a couple years ago in Charleston. She and my best friend stood in line for up to an hour and a half to meet her and she was so excited when she did. It was an amazing event, with so many remarkable authors. We look forward to trying to go again this year.

Now on to my review of this amazing finale!

Okay so going into this book, I had already heard the spoilers about what happens to Tris. That being said I wasn't really interested in reading a book where something so terrible happens to such a loved character, so I put this book on hold for a long time and now I have finally read the final installment to the amazing Divergent Series and I am glad I finally picked up the book.

Veronica Roth is a phenomenal author and she truly knows how to develop such an intense and dangerous world. I felt has though I was living through all the experiences the characters went through. It was great getting to read from both Tobias and Tris's POV's. I always wondered what was going through Tobias's head. It was kind of sad to see that he wasn't the always confident, brave soul from Divergent. It was nice actually getting to read more about him and see what he thought of everything that was occurring.

I loved how the story took a genetic turn, I honestly did not see that coming and it was a unique twist on a dystopian story. I liked getting to meet new people, Mathew was probably one of my favorite new characters. As for Nita, I didn't trust her for a second. It really ticked me off when Tobias went right along with her in her plans to rebel against the Bureau all because they told him he was "genetically damaged."

As we all know I was prepared for the death of Tris because of all the spoilers on social network. However, I was not ready to lose so many beloved characters through this book and it felt as though their deaths all hit at once. This ending was probably the saddest ending I have read in a long time, it almost felt as though I was reading a Nicholas Sparks book. Reading from Tobias's POV only made her death more real. But I can't blame Veronica Roth for killing off Tris, the entire time she focuses on how far one will go to protect those that they love and for Tris that was sacrificing her own life. It made her death mean something and made it that much harder to deal with.

This was a great ending to an already pretty amazing series, plus I could stand Tris a lot more in this book. Insurgent was hard for me to get through because of her drastic personality change. It was nice to see her back to the strong female role she played.

I am a big fan of Veronica Roth, and look forward to reading any future books she writes!

Review: Splintered by A.G. Howard

Splintered
By: A.G. Howard

Genre: Fairytale Retelling
Length: 371 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence.

Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

*** Caution Spoilers Ahead ***

I loved this book from beginning to end! I had no desire in putting it down and I just couldn't stopping talking about it to friends and family. This story takes you through the miraculous world of Wonderland! A.G. Howard does an amazing job developing a world that you wish you lived in and characters that you fall in love with. Take Morpheus and Jeb for example, both great characters!

I was literally crying in the end. The way they killed off Morpheus and Jeb in the end and then bring them both back. I honestly didn't know why I was crying. I couldn't figure out whether it was happiness they were alive or sadness that A.G. Howard would do such a thing. I mean honestly what girl wouldn't love both of them and not want either to get hurt or die. I felt as though a part of myself was dying when I read that part of the book.

But can we just put that aside and talk about something for a moment. Was this honestly a real connection between Jeb and Alyssa?

"Al." His Adam's apple moves as he swallows. "I want you to put a stop to this Hitch thing. Whatever's going on, it's not worth..." He pauses. "Losing an important part of you." Unbelievable. He thinks I'm such a prude, he won't even say the word. "You mean my virginity?" His neck flashes red. "You deserve better than some one-night thing. You're the kind of girl who should have a commitment from a guy who actually cares. Okay?"

Like can we just except the fact that he got all jealous about the entire Hitch thing, just shows how much he cares about her. An uncontrollable love that he would even bleed for her to live!

I am so excited to start reading book two, Unhinged, thanks to my amazing mom who bought me the rest of the series "just because." I can not wait to see what the future has in story for these amazing characters!

My Overall Review:

My mom read this series a few months back after we meet James Dashner at Ya'llFest and she absolutely loved it. Which is saying a lot because it is rare that my mom finds a book that she truly enjoys. She actually couldn't wait to finish the series she went out the day after finishing The Scorch Trials to purchase the last book in the series, The Death Cure. After seeing how much she loved this series I moved it to the top of my To-Read list. I just had to see what the hype was all about.

Sadly, I watched the movies before I read the books so I had a bit of a biased opinion when it came to the books because I absolutely loved the movies. However, I do have to say if you want the full effect of the books I would try and refrain from watching the movies before reading the books, because the movies take a bit of a different turn than the books. Even so, I still really enjoyed this series. It did take my some time to read these books because I was doing a Buddy Read at the same time and had to put The Maze Runner on hold for a bit, but once I picked the books back up I had no interest in putting them down.

The books start with a group of boys stuck in a maze fighting for survival and a way out, back home. However, they are without memories of their past and have no clue how to leave the maze, until Thomas and Teresa arrive and shake things up. After they arrive everything changes. I loved the way James Dashner developed the world of the Gladers, he really made it seem as though you were stuck in the maze with these the characters.

I really enjoyed the ending to the first book, it was full of action and really set you up for the next installment of the series. It left you wondering what was going to happen to the remaining Gladers. I couldn't wait to start The Scorch Trails and once I did it took me some time to get used to the path the story was taking because like I said I watched the movie first and the movie and book are not similar in the least. There are very few similarities between the two. Even so, I still really enjoyed the books.

In book two, the Gladers think the have been rescued from WICKED, only to find out that it is more of the same; more trails, more death and more lies. So the boys find themselves stuck in the Scorch, hiding from Cranks and racing against time to a WICKED safe haven for a cure to The Flare. We are introduced to two great characters in book two, Jorge and Brenda; liked those two from the very beginning. I had no idea they were hiding so many secrets; in which you don't find out until book three. So much happened throughout this book with Thomas and the other Gladers, as well as with Teresa. I never really trusted that girl. Brenda and Thomas all the way!!

After finishing book two I couldn't wait to read The Death Cure, however I was a bit disappointed in the story, I was expected a much more climactic ending then what we got. However, I still really enjoyed the book and all the developments that unfolded about WICKED and The Flare. I wasn't expecting all the twists and turns that occurred throughout the final book, such as Gally working for the Right Arm. Did not see that coming, I mean who knew he was even still alive.

Aside from Thomas, Newt and Minho had to be my two favorite characters throughout this series. They had such distinct personalities and no matter what happened they always had Thomas back. I loved the bond those three shared. It only made it harder when we found out that Newt was infected with The Flare. Another, twist I was not prepared for in the final installment.

After finishing The Maze Runner trilogy, I decide to read The Kill Order. My mom tried to read it has well as a family friend and they both could not finish the book, so of course I had to see why they had such a hard time reading it. After starting the book I figured out real quick why, the characters in The Kill Order are not the same characters as from The Maze Runner. The Kill Order follows Mark, Alec, Trina and their friends through the world after the sun-flares destroy humanity. Throughout the book we follow this group of people as they try to discover why the government has infected them with such a deadly and corruptive virus and if they can find a cure. We also get to see where one of the main characters from The Maze Runner came from and how their experiences may have effected their choices in the future series.

Even though the characters where not the same in The Kill Order, I really enjoyed the story. For me it was like reading a whole new series.

If you haven't already read this series I highly recommend that you do. James Dashner is a phenomenal author and he has developed a remarkable dystopian world. Now that I have read the books I look forward to re-watching the movies now in a different light.

My Review:

Rating:

Wow...this has to be one of the best books I have read by far! I didn't want to put this book down for anything. While I have read many of Cassandra Clare's books (The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, two of my FAVORITE series!!), this is my first book written by Holly Black and I have to say she is as phenomenal an author as Cassandra. I look forward of reading more of her work, starting with book two of The Magisterium Series

As I read this book it took me back to the days of Hogwarts, so much of this book had a Harry Potter feel, from the characters to the remarkable world of magic that Holly and Cassandra developed. Which only made me love this book even more, my friends and I think it is almost as good as J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter Series

I absolutely loved Callum and Aaron's friendship, their witty banter reminded me a lot of Harry and Ron from Harry Potter. Like the scene where Aaron offers Callum some chips, I can totally see Ron doing the same to Harry on the Hogwarts Express. They are both the best main characters I've every had the pleasure of reading about and sharing a splendid adventure through dangerous obstacles and magical wonders with.

Then there is Tamara, whom acts all motherly just like Hermione. The characters that Holly and Cassandra developed takes me back to my Harry Potter reading crazy. This new series feels as though Hogwarts has been reborn for a new generation of book lovers.

I highly recommend reading this series, especially if you have a love for Harry Potter. I can't wait to start reading book two of this already great series. Stay tune for my review on book two, I have feeling I am going to fly through book two.

My Overall Review:

Caution may contain spoilers!!

This is probably one of the best trilogies I have read in a long time. Jessica Brody is a remarkable author, she is an amazing story teller and has put together an great story here about true love, mad scientists and time travel.

I met Jessica Brody a couple years ago at a book signing, she is such a sweet person and after hearing her talk about her book during a panel I sat in on I knew I just had to read this series. However, sadly life got in the way and other books came out that jumped to the front of the line and this series just kept getting pushed further and further down the list. So when a friend on Goodreads (Erika from Maniacal Reader) asked me to do a Buddy Read and suggested this series, I jumped on the chance. This was my first Buddy Read and I really enjoyed it, it's great hearing what others think about books.

“Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no, it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring barque,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.”

The first book centers most around Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare. One of my favorite poems of all time!  A nameless girl is found among the wreckage of a plane crash in 2013 with no memory of who she is or where. She's sent to live with a foster family, but as time goes on she discovers she is not what she seems. There is much more to her than meets the eye. Then a boy name Zen enters her life and shakes up all she has come to know and love, but there is more to Zen as well. He knows this nameless girl, Seraphina.

I loved how this book kept you guessing you never really knew what was going to happen next. I was not prepared for the futuristic twist this series was going to take. SERA AND ZEN FROM THE FUTURE...WHAT?? TRAVELING THROUGH TIME?!? I was definitely not ready for that, it was a welcome surprise that really added to the story. I like being surprised when reading a book, it nice not knowing what is going to happen next.

“Trust your heart."..."It's the only thing that will never lie to you.”

You come to find that Sera and Zen were trying to escape from Diotech, the company that created Sera from synthetic DNA, another twist I did not see coming. They planned to run away and travel back in time to 1609, the year Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 116, a place Diotech could never tear them apart. However, like all great plans things went array, they were separated on the journey to 1609.

We get to meet so many amazing characters throughout this first book. Like Cody, Sera's nerdy, sarcastic thirteen year old foster brother. I loved him has a secondary character. He definitely added a little something to the story. Then there's the mysteries Dr. Maxxer, when I first came across her character I knew there had to be more to her story and I wasn't disappointed, she came back in Unforgotten with an even more detailed story. Both Cody and Dr. Maxxer make an appearance in Unforgotten actually, they play a major part in what develops throughout the second book.

Sera and Zen made it to 1609, away from Diotech and Dr. Alixter, the monster determined to take Sera away from Zen and use her for his own diabolical plans. However, things go wrong when Sera shows off her talents in order to save Zen. She winds up on a witch trail while Zen lies dying from a mysteries illness.  This is about when Kaelan is introduced, a Diotech agent tasked with unlocking Sera's cryptic memories to a cure for Dr. Alixter and bringing back Diotech's trillion dollar investment. From the beginning I did not trust him. I was TEAM ZEN all the way!! I was until the very end. However, as time went on and his personality started to shine through and I began to like his character more.

We find that Dr. Maxxer plays a huge role in much that happens throughout this story, and why Sera ended up in 2013 instead of with Zen. Cody also makes an appearance in this book as an adult with his own family. It was nice to have familiar secondary characters return, especially when you thought they were gone for good.

Once again it seems Diotech is going to win this battle as well because Sera will do whatever it takes to save Zen. They have a bond that no one can destroy, no matter how many times they alter her memories. That is until she returns to Diotech, and makes an exchange for the antidote to cure Zen.

The final book. Unchanged was bit of a challenge for me to finish. I had a hard time with the new Sera. Diotech once again altered her memories but this time they tweaked a few things and she was never really the same character we had come to know and love in the first two books. Zen isn't able to bring her back to him as easily, she thinks of him has the boy that deceived her thanks to Diotech's technology. It was interesting to see her struggle with what she has been told is right and what she knows to be right. That constant struggle made this a remarkable final installment to an already great series.

We learn so much about Diotech and who Sera really is in Unchanged. This was a great ending to a remarkable story. While I wasn't to keen on the ending of the third book, it was still one of the best endings I have read in a while. It truly shows you nothing can stand in the way of true love.

"Yes...Always yes."

I would definitely recommend this trilogy! It is an amazing read and I'm sorry it took me this longer to get to reading it. I hope to read more of Jessica Brody's work and I really hope she writes more books like these. The mystery and unexpected twists and turns really kept me engrossed in the story, it kept me wanting more. She did an amazing job bringing the Diotech world to life.

Another Flea Market Book Haul!!

Today my mom and I drove out to the Oldsmar Flea Market to trade in some old books we did not plan on keeping, most of which were my Grams. Been doing some early Spring cleaning and preparing for an upcoming Garage Sale, so in the process we all decided to clean up our bookshelves and trade in some books we had no interest in holding on to.

Plus, my sister and I need to make room on our bookshelves, so of course we can buy more books. Which is exactly what we did, we traded in books just to return home with more. :D

Now let's take a quick look at some of the new books we have welcomed into our home!

Review: Crown of Midnight by: Sarah J. Maas

Crown of Midnight
By: Sarah J. Maas

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Length: 418 pages

Synopsis From Goodreads:

"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend."

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

My Review:

Rating:

Wow...another jaw-dropping book by Sarah J. Maas! She is a remarkable author and has delivered an amazing sequel to her Bestselling novel Throne of Glass. She has a great way of developing the world of Adarlan so it feels as if your living the story with the characters. Its remarkably easy to imagine the world and all the battles that Celaena and her companions find themselves in. To me that is what makes a book, you have to be able to feel part of the world for it to be an EPIC story.

I found myself engrossed in this story once again from the very first page. It picks up shortly after Celaena wins the competition becoming the King's Champion, so it felt as if no time went by. Which made it much easier to pick up where I had left off.

This time there is no competition, yet Celaena keeps finding trouble for herself among the castle walls. There are so many mysteries within those walls and Celaena manages to stumble upon all of them. She is tasked with discovering the King's true power, however at first she refuses, not wanting to risk the ones she loves. (Like Chaol!!) But once tragedy strikes close to home she has no choice but to uncover the mysteries that lie beneath the castle.

I love the mystery that Sarah J. Maas twists into her stories. They are so subtle at first that sometimes you almost miss them and sometimes once you discover the truth you find it's only another lie. The way she weaves such a miraculous mystery together is amazing! She keeps you guessing from beginning to end. One of the mysteries we discover is that some magic still exists in Adarlan, it has all been snuffed out by the King and he knows it. What is the Kings end game?

“I worry because I care. Gods help me, I know I shouldn't, but I do. So I will always tell you to be careful, because I will alwayscare what happens.”

I was so excited to see the relationship among Celaena and Chaol blossom. I had been waiting for that since book one, yet of course that relationship met it's end shortly after it began. However, I have high hopes that we will see more of them together in future books.

“It’s never made any difference to me when it came to you. I’d still pick you. I’ll always pick you.”

I can't wait to get my hands on book 3, Heir of Fire! I may have to cave and finally buy it from Book Outlet, its been sitting in my cart for two weeks now. I mean honestly I don't know what I'm waiting for, this series is amazing!! I am ready to see what kind of mysteries Celaena is going to discover while on her mission in Wendlyn for the King. And is Chaol going to come find her now that he's discovered her true identity?
