Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by: Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
By: Michelle Hodkin

Series: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer Series
Genre:  Young Adult Paranormal, Romance
Length: 456 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

It can.

There is.

She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.

She's wrong.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

This book was absolutely amazing!! I devoured it from the very beginning. Even though this is my first Michelle Hodkin book I found her to be a magnificent author, she has definitely made it to my list of favorite authors. She has done a remarkable job developing this odd, crazy world that Mara has found herself a part of.

This book has been on my to-read list for a very long time. However, it was never really on the top of that list until my best friend read it and fell in love with the series. She was nice enough to buy the entire series for me, just so I could read the series and share in her joy of such a remarkable book. And I have to say she did not disappoint (Not that I would very doubt her lol).

I liked Mara's character from the very beginning, she had such a strong personality that really drew me to her character. I just had to know what really happened to Mara while in the Asylum and why she survived when no one else did. As I started the book I truly thought she was losing her mind, so when the paranormal twist came in towards the end I was completely caught off guard. I can't wait to see what kind of paranormal abilities Noah and Mara possess.

“Thinking something does not make it true. Wanting something does not make it real.”

I truly did not expect Mara to have anything to do with anyone's death, at least not until the end. I was just has baffled as she was as to why these people were dying. So when we find out that she and Noah possess very Yin and Yang powers, I was shocked and couldn't wait to see where they came from and why them. Looks like I have to wait until the next book to discover more about these powers the both possess.

“Today, tonight, tommorrow, forever. I was made for you”

Noah and Mara are the cutest! I loved watching their relationship grow, and slowly dissolve towards the end, as Mara began to embrace her new power. I look forward to seeing if they can get their relationship back to where it was or have a stronger bond with their shared abilities.

I look forward to reading book two, especially since it has been sitting on my nightstand for the past couple nights. Being such a busy past couple days I haven't had the opportunity to start it yet. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for Mara and Noah. And why is Jude still alive? Does he have a power all his own?

Review: Deity by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Deity
By: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: The Covenant Series
Length: 330 pages
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy, Paranormal
Synopsis From Goodreads:

History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time.

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!!

Let's be honest I love all of Jennifer L. Armentrout's books! She is an amazing author and I love her writing style. She really knows how to develop fun characters, people you can't help but fall in love with. I never want to put her books down and I'm always finding it hard not to read a page here and there while at work.

“That simple act stole my breath, my heart. But even as he pulled away, I realized that he couldn't steal something he already had.”

It made me hapy to see Aiden and Alex find their way back to each other. They are the cutest couple I have read in a while. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for them, especially after that cliffhanger ending. I had a feel she would be connected to Seth and lose herself in the process, however I still was not prepared for it.

Now while I love Seth in The Return series, I am not his biggest fan right now. I had a feeling he was keeping secrets from Alex! And the way Lucian has him wrapped around his finger. Seth has truly become power hungry. As for Lucian, I didn't trusted him from the beginning, he always seemed like he was up too something. Turns out my instincts were right on point!!

I truly enjoy reading JLA's books and can't wait to get my hands on the last two books in this series! I know what I'll be asking for this Christmas!

Review: The Heir by: Kiera Cass

The Heir
By: Kiera Cass

Series: The Selection Series
Genre: Young Adult Romance, Dystopian
Length: 342 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon—and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she'd put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess's life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can't escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn't expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn's heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn't as impossible as she's always thought.

My Review:

Rating:

Kiera Cass is a phenomenal author. I love her writing style and the way she brings such a magnificent world to life. I enjoyed this story, however not as much as I loved Maxon and America's story. It was nice to see them all grown up with children of their own. When I saw that there was a continuation to this remarkable series I couldn't wait to start reading it. However, I found myself to be a bit disappointed.

"I'm Eadlyn Schreave, and no one in the world is as powerful as me."

I found Eadlyn to be selfish, rude and very egotistical. I found her to be very annoying. She was closed off and determined to sabotage the Selection process by making the men hate her or fear her enough to leave. However, as the story continues her plans only backfire and her country begins to wonder her true motives behind the Selection.

While Eadlyn went on several dates, I never really felt her connect with anyone other than maybe Kile. This book lacked much of the romance that was found in the previous books. Every time I started a new chapter I was waiting for a heart-stopping romance to begin brewing with Eadlyn and one of the Selected. I know who I hope she picks, but I have a feeling based off of some spoilers I accidentally stumbled upon that she does not pick my favorite.

The cliff-hanger was heartbreaking! How could Kiera Cass do this to us? I felt like the ending was abrupt, yet it added something that the story was lacking.

I still plan on reading The Crown, only because I want to see what becomes of America and Maxon. I had high hopes for this book, especially after the amazing writing in the first three books. Maybe this last book will redeem this lack-luster story.

The One
By: Kiera Cass

Series: The Selection Series
Genre: Young Adult Romance, Dystopian
Length: 323 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

The time has come for one winner to be crowned.

When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.

My Review:

So I have to start by saying I started this series last year and absolutely  loved the first two books but never really got around to finishing it. Sadly I took a break from the series and started reading other books, so when I saw this book sitting on my bookshelf unread I decided it was time to finish this series. I am glad I finally read this book because it was the best conclusion to an already amazing story.

Kiera Cass is an amazing author. I love her writing style, she develops such loving characters and builds a remarkable dystopian world of kings and queens. She makes you truly feel for the characters, almost as if you are living the story through America. When she is loathing the king or falling in love with the prince you find yourself feeling all the emotions with her. Kiera Cass is a phenomenal author and I can't wait to read more of her work!

We got to learn so much more about the Northern rebels and their true goals. I liked learning they weren't the real bad guys. They just wanted to better the kingdom and get rid of the castes. We even find out that America's father had a connection to the Northern rebels, sadly that revolution only came after her father passed.

Maxon and America have the cutest relationship. I loved watching their relationship grow and blossom into something amazing. They went through somewhat normal relationship struggles, even though they lived in a castle.

It was even nice to see that Aspen had moved on from America with Lucy. The way they both came clean about their feelings after such a tragic act of violence. Turns out they both found love in a castle they grew up despising.

This book had me craving more from the very beginning. This was a true page-turner. I would be up until midnight reading, having to know what happens. In only a couple of days I powered through this book.

I would definitely recommend this series to anyone that hasn't read it yet. Kiera Cass has done an amazing job with this series. I have a feeling I'll be reading The Hier next.

Rating:

So first I must say, when I started this book I thought it was the last in the series, then I came to find out that a fourth book is being released. I am super excited for the next installment to be released, this book left you with alot of unanswered questions, such as where have Clarke's parents been? We didn't get much of Clarke and her parents, they only showed up in the last couple of chapters. I look forward to finding out how and why her parents were sent down to earth in the first dropship.

Also, what happens with the rebel Earthborns? At the end there is a huge battle but nothing is really resolved. Will we be seeing then again? And will we be seeing Kendell again? She was one character I never really trusted, especially after book two. She followed Wells around way too much.

Clarke and Bellamy are the cutest! I can't wait for more of them in the next book. I love watching the two of them grow together, how they always fight for one another. I wish the show would catch up and bring them together!! :)

Wells and Sasha were also a very cute couple and I was rooting for them. I loved their relationship, they had two of the cutest personalities when they were together. I did not expect such a tragic end for them.

One major thing I love about this series is that Kass Morgan picks up right where she left off in the previous book. In Homecoming, we pick right up with the hundred helping the survivers of the dropships and bringing them back to camp. So now we have Glass and Luke on earth together, struggling to survive and rebuild their relationship after secrets were exposed on the ship. Aside from Bellamy and Clarke, these two are my favorite couple in this series.

I highly recommend this series, it is definitely worth reading. However, I am bigger fan of the tv show, the series is still a fun read. I find myself wishing they would do some of the things from the book in the show. The book does have some amazing qualities and I definitely plan to finish the series.

Review: Day 21 by: Kass Morgan

The 100: Day 21
By: Kass Morgan

Synopsis From Goodreads:

No one has set foot on Earth in centuries -- until now.
It's been 21 days since the hundred landed on Earth. They're the only humans to set foot on the planet in centuries...or so they thought. Facing an unknown enemy, Wells attempts to keep the group together. Clarke strikes out for Mount Weather, in search of other Colonists, while Bellamy is determined to rescue his sister, no matter the cost. And back on the ship, Glass faces an unthinkable choice between the love of her life and life itself.
In this pulse-pounding sequel to Kass Morgan's The 100, secrets are revealed, beliefs are challenged, and relationships are tested. And the hundred will struggle to survive the only way they can -- together.

My Review:

Rating:

I really enjoyed this book. I love the multiple character points-of-view, getting to see the world through more than one persons eyes is great. You not only get to experience Earth with The Hundred but space with those left behind dying and struggling to find a way to survive until they can make it to Earth themselves.

Kass Morgan picks up right where she left off with Clarke and Bellamy searching for his sister Octavia, Glass and Luke deprived of oxygen on Walden as the Colony dies slowly, and Wells trying to take control over an unruly group of teenage criminals.

The relationships throughout this book are amazing, Team Clarke and Bellamy forever!!! I enjoyed watching their relationship grow and go through struggles that normal couples experience. I was shocked when we found out that Bellamy had a history with Lily (Clarke's friend from book 1). We find out that many of the 100 are connected in ways many wouldn't expect.

I'm still waiting for their relationship to blossom on the show.

Glass and Luke are the cutest! I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for them. Only good things I hope!!

I enjoyed this book from the very beginning. While it took me sometime to get back into the story, I loved where the story took us. We finally got to meet the Earthborns and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of the rebel group of Earthborns.

However, for me I am still a super fan of the tv show and almost enjoy it more than the books. Which is very rare!!! Now finishing up the series with Homecoming, can't wait to see what is in store for the 100 because the show and the book are polar opposites.

For anyone watching the show I would highly reccommend reading this series if you haven't already. Its definitely worth it just to compare the stories.

Review: The Copper Gauntlet by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

The Copper Gauntlet
By: Cassandra Clare & Holly Black

Series: Magisterium Series
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Length: 264 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

Callum Hunt’s summer break isn’t like other kids’. His closest companion is a Chaos-ridden wolf, Havoc. His father suspects him of being secretly evil. And, of course, most kids aren’t heading back to the magical world of the Magisterium in the fall.

It’s not easy for Call . . . and it gets even harder after he checks out his basement and discovers that his dad might be trying to destroy both him and Havoc.

Call escapes to the Magisterium -- but things only intensify there. The Alkahest -- a copper gauntlet capable of separating certain magicians from their magic -- has been stolen. And in their search to discover the culprit, Call and his friends Aaron and Tamara awaken the attention of some very dangerous foes -- and get closer to an even more dangerous truth.

As the mysteries of the Magisterium deepen and widen, bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare take readers on an extraordinary journey through one boy’s conflict -- and a whole world’s fate.

My Review:

Rating:

Holly Black and Cassandra Clare are remarkable authors. They truly know how to bring the Magisterium world to life. Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite authors, ever since I read her Mortal Instruments series. So when this series was released I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

I honestly love how Havoc is a wolf that no one seems to care about and just lets him roam about the Magisterium and the mundane world (see what I did there?). And the fact that Callum and the gang just took Jasper with them on a "road trip." I got a good laugh when everyone regretted Callum's desicion, even Jasper himself. Holly and Cassandra really know how to bring humor to such an amazing story.

If you read between the lines Havoc's little dog barks are telling everybody, "Who decided to bring this ding dong along? Like who said I wanted to smell his fresh rich smell the entire time?" I found it really sad when Callum turned to see Havoc bowing at him towards the end, when the others did.

I can't wait to get my hands on The Bronze Key. This is one amazing series and I highly reccommend this book to anyone who hasn't read it already.

Don't Look Back
By: Jennifer L. Armentrout

All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?

My Review:

Rating:

This is true proof that Jennifer L. Armentrout is a phenomenal author and can write pretty much anything, spin-chilling mysteries to epic action thrillers involving Greek gods. She is an amzing author and my inspiration for getting back into writing. I haven't read a book of hers I didn't enjoy!!

Don't Look Back had me hooked from the very beginning. This was one book I had zero interest in putting down-sleep and work were necessary evils. JLA really knows how to spin a bone-chilling thriller with unexpected twists and turns. Everytime I thought I had the killer figured out a new clue would unfold causing me to second guess my conclusion.

I loved the characters! Samantha and Carson were absolutely adorable, I couldn't get enough of their relationship. The amnesia twist was also a great add to the story, it was fun discovering the secrets about Sam's past and following her through recovered memories. Each memory hinted at a new suspect, making me only wanting more.

This is one book I would highly recommend. JLA does not disappoint, she keeps you captivated with mystery and a need for answers. I can't wait for her new adult mystery being released soon, Til Death. She has quite the talent for writing mystery thrillers that draw you in and grab ahold of you until the very end.

Review: Pure by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Pure
By: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: The Covenant Series
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy, Paranormal
Length: 329 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

There is need. And then there is Fate. Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's other half is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her. When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon--and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude--or killing her. When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

A truly marvelous story with, captivating characters and a love triangle to die for!!

Jennifer L. Armentrout is an amazing author. She is the best and her writing style is magnificent, she draws you in from the very first page and keeps your attention until the very end. She builds a world you can feel a part of and characters that you can get invested in.

Alex is my favorite female protagonist, I love her personality and wish I could be more like her. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Alex and her heart-stopping boys.

If you follow our blog you know I have read the Titans series and absolutely  love Seth. I liked that this book focused more on Seth and Alex's growing relationship. Even though I am not a fan of love triangles, this is one I can get behind. Its nice getting a glimpse at the Seth before Josie!! While I like Seth and Alex's relationship I see it as more of a friendship, she is destined to be with Aiden-even if it is a big no-no.

“Ever since I’ve met you, I’ve wanted to break every rule.” Aiden turned away, the muscles in his neck tensing. He sighed. “You’ll become the centre of someone’s world one day. And he’ll be the luckiest son of a bitch on this earth.”

Forever Team Alex and Aiden, their relationship is adorable. Throughout this book I found myself wanting and waiting for more scenes between them.

I can't wait to get my hands on Deity, I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Alex. If you haven't yet read this book, I highly suggest you do, the story and writing is amazing!! Definitely worth reading!

My Review:

Captivating! Nonstop action! A book to die for!

This trilogy has to be one of my absolute favorites from this year. The 5th Wave had me hooked from the very beginning and I couldn't wait to get my hands on The Last Star the moment it came out. I held off reading it only because I knew I would be sad to see the series end. However, this book was no disappointment, it held the same level of greatness as the first two books.

Rick Yancey is a phenomenal author, these are the first books I have read by him and look forward to reading more of his work. He really knows how to draw you in and develop a world that you can find yourself getting lost in. He had me hooked from book one!

I really enjoyed that this book focused so much on Ringer and Zombie. I enjoyed getting the opportunity to know them more and see the world through their eyes. Don't get me wrong I loved Cassie, she was an amazing character, but it was nice just to see their views and watch their relationship grow. The other thing I like about this series is it never really feels like there is one main character and the rest are all secondary characters. Throughout the entire trilogy Rick Yancey did an amazing job of making each role seem equal to the one that came before it.

I never thought I would be able to enjoy a book that didn't have a romantic relationship brewing in the background of whatever catastrophe was happening. However, with this series romance was not a main focus and it only made me enjoy the story more. Yes, there is romance but it is subtle, something I enjoyed very much.

There were so many twists and turns throughout this story, from the beginning I had a feeling we were going to lose a beloved character, but I was not prepared for the loss we were about to take. The sacrifice one character made to save their friends and the world. I was a bit shell-shocked when this revolution was made and mentally hoping they would turn around and change their mind.

The ending was bittersweet, not only did we loss a great character but also an amazing series was ending. I loved the moral behind this story that it is so easy to lose faith in humanity. That we turn on one another so easily and follow blindly into a cause we may no little about. This story holds true to so many of the events happening now in todays life.

If you haven't had the opportunity to read this series, I highly recommend it! I fell in love with this trilogy from the very first book and it only got better as the books continued. I definitely see this being a book that I could read over and over again.

If you have read it, please feel free to share your thought and opinions? We love to hear from our followers!

Review: Half-blood by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-blood
By: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Length: 281 pages
Synopsis From Goodreads:

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is.

If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Another amazing book by Jennifer L. Armentrout! This book had me hooked from page one. I started reading the Titans series and fell in love with the characters. Once I read The Power I figured I had better start reading 0 0 series as soon as possible so that I could understand more of Seth's background. I am so glad I started this series, it is absolutely amazing and I love the characters.

Jennifer L. Armentrout is an amazing author, I love all her books and this one was no exception. She really knows how to bring the Covenant world alive and gets you invested in the characters. I truly enjoy books like that! Books that pull you in from the very beginning. Plus this book had so many twists and turns I didn't see coming. Alex an Apollyon and her mother a diamon. What?!?

Alex was the best female protagonist I've read about in a long time. She went through the emotions of losing her mom only to find she was a daimon and yet she was still a strong female character. She was rebellious and didn't like following the rules, which made her a very interesting and fun character to read. Her witty comments and attitude reminded me alot of Seth.

Seth was still super swoon-worthy even in this book. Jennifer makes it very hard to choose between two males characters because Aiden and Seth are both amazing for different reasons. I loved watching Aiden and Alex's forbidden relationship blossom. I can't wait to see what is in store for these two in Pure.

Caleb was my favorite secondary character, he is the best friend every girl wants. The way he was always there for Alex and no matter what he had her back. Jennifer had me worried about his fate there for a bit towards the end. I look forward to reading more of he and Alex's shenanigans in book two.

I can't wait to get my hands on Pure, I am going to have to purchase book two as soon as possible. I must know what happens between Aiden and Alex!

I was so excited to start this book, it had so much potential. And after reading the reviews on Goodreads and seeing the 4.5 star rating I had very high hopes for an excellent story. However, I was sadly disappointed. This book was another Buddy Read with Erika (from Maniacal Reader).
I had a hard time getting into this book, it took me forever to sit down and really want to read this book. I could never really follow the plot of the story or where the story was headed, and yet at the same time the ending was a bit predictable. The story never really pulled me in. The storyline didn't really pick up until the last few chapters.
Also, I found Calla, the main character to be a bit dull and whiny. I enjoy reading books with strong female leads that act as role models for young girls. She was always second guessing her discussions and whining to Shay about how she can't go around breaking rules. I found alot of her and Shay's arguments to be repeditive. I was hoping for a more developed group of characters and a much stronger storyline.
The romance was also something I just could not get on board with. Insta-love is not something I look forward to reading and that is exactly what you got from page one. This book focused mostly on the romance. Shay the soulmate you should love was anything but heartthrob-worthy, he was just as whiny and dull as Calla. He was also very pushy and constantly fawning over Calla. Yet, Ren, the alpha male wasn't much better.
I may of loved this book if I had read it when it was first released. When I was still in my Twilight phase. So my lack of falling in love with this book may be partly contributed to the timing and my lack of interest in Paranormal books lately. I haven't read many Vampire and Werewolf books in the recent years.
I may one day finish the series, only because I hate to leave a series unfinished, however it may be some time before I get back around to this series.
