Review: The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

The Infinite Sea
By: Rick Yancey

Genre: Science Fiction, Young Adult
Length: 320 pages

Synopsis From Goodreads:

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Another gripping page-turner!!

Absolutely loved this sequel. We all know most sequels are never as good as the first book, but Rick Yancey did a great job making this book just as captivating as book one!!

OMG...Rick Yancey is a phenomenal writer, I was sucked right into this story just like I was with The 5th Wave. The book started out a bit slow, but after a couple of pages I was engulfed in the amazing story Rick Yancey has developed. This book is quite a bit shorter than The 5th Wave, which of course I was a bit disappointed about, but now that I have finished it I think it was just the right length. The end leaves you ready for the final installment, The Last Star. A cliffhanger that keeps you guessing and ready for more!

All the events that took place developed during a short period of time as well. While one character was trapped in a new Camp Haven the other characters where planning their escape from a run-down hotel. Also, the first book focused mostly on Cassie, while this book centered more around Ringer. I had hoped for more of Cassie, but I came to really enjoy read about Ringer. I loved getting to read more about her character, we didn't get to see much of her in book one. I wasn't a big fan of hers throughout the first book, but now that has changed. I am really rooting for her character in book three.

Ringer and Razor are quite the pair...I loved their witty conversations as she was laid up in a hospital bed after Vosch injected her with "the hub." She has been upgraded into a stronger human-being, which I found quite interesting a definitely did not see coming. Way to turn the story all around on us Mr. Yancey. ;) I can't wait to see what happens to these two amazing characters. The end of the book definitely leaves you guessing as to what might come next for these two.

Rick Yancey really knows how to develop characters we can fall in love with.

Of course the invincible Evan is still alive...Thank God!! I love his character. He and Cassie are perfect together and I can't wait to read more of them in The Last Star! Of course...like Evan fashion he had me a bit worried during this book, but he surprised us once again! :D

This book answers quite a few of the questions book one left us with, however it only brings up new questions that I can't wait to have answered. Where are the aliens if not in the "infected?" What is their true agenda? Are they really aliens or is something else going on here?

And the big question, why do they really need these advanced humans? What secrets do they have?

May cannot get here soon enough. I'm so excited for my birthday month this year, just so I can get this book!! I have to know how everything ends. If you haven't read this series you definitely should. It is an amazing story, that really pulls you in from page one.

Hmmm....what should I read next while I wait? :)

Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave
By: Rick Yancey

Genre: Science Fiction, Young Adult
Length: 457 pages

Synopsis From Goodreads:

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

"But if I'm it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I'm going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity's last war, then I am the battlefield."

OMG...this book was absolutely amazing!! I didn't think I would ever find another extraterrestrial related book that could compare to Jennifer L. Armentrout's Lux Series. But this book is right up there with that series, it had me hooked from the very beginning. I did not want to put the book down for anything. I would find myself reaching for it between calls at work just so I could see what was going to happen next. It had me drawn in from the very first page!! :D

Rick Yancey is an amazing author, he did an amazing job describing the world Cassie, Ben, Sammy and Evan find themselves in after the Others arrive and begin the Waves that destroyed the planet. As your reading, you find yourself engulfed in the book as if you are really there experiencing the story with the characters. He really had a way of bringing each Wave alive has Cassie described them in the first half of the book. I'm excited to see them brought to live in theaters.

My soul purpose of starting this book was because the movie was coming to theaters this month. The trailer looked amazing and grabbed my attention instantly!! I knew I just had to read the book before seeing the movie, and this book certainly didn't disappoint. I loved every second of it!! Book two, The Infinite Sea, is already next on my to read list. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment.  The multiple POV's throughout the book was a major plus for me. It was nice not being stuck following one character around for 457 pages. Sometimes that can get a bit boring, so it was nice switching it up every now and then with a new character. In order to experiencing what they were going through during the 4th Wave. You got to experience Cassie trying to survive in order to save her brother Sammy, as well as Ben struggling to survive boot camp. We even got a little bit of Sammy and Evan's POV's throughout the book!! I am definitely crossing my fingers for more of Evan's POV in book two, he had to be my favorite character in book one; followed closely by Cassie!! ;)

“I had it all wrong," he says. "Before I found you, I thought the only way to hold on was to find something to live for. It isn't. To hold on, you have to find something you're willing to die for."

Team Cassie and Evan all the way! I loved reading their scenes even though they were short. I enjoyed reading how their relationship developed and discovering Evan's secrets!! I had a feeling he was one of the Others from the moment he was introduced. They had such cute moments, reading the book only made me more excited for the movie and to see his character develop on the big screen. And to see Cassie and Evan's relationship, that is something I cannot wait for!

However, now that Ben and Cassie are together at the end of book one, I am interested to see where their friendship may whined up. I have a feeling something may develop between them in the second book, and yet I may be wrong. I crossing my fingers for a relationship to develop between Ringer and Ben, they had a strong bond towards the end of book one.

This is definitely a book to read!! Rick Yancey has done an amazing job developing a world where aliens invade the planet and humans are helpless to do anything, except for a small group of kids ready to fight back to save their home.

Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass
By: Sarah J. Maas

Genre:  Fantasy, Young Adult, Romance
Length:  404 pages

Synopsis From Goodreads:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

First book to be finished and reviewed in 2016 and it turns out to be one of my favorites. It is definitely ending up in my favorite section of my bookshelf. :D Loved every moment of this book, really wish I could have sat and read it all in one sitting but with work and the holidays that sadly did not happen, which made it difficult to stay in the action with the characters. Even so this was an amazing book and I cannot wait to read book two.

“Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”

Celaena Sardothien is an assassin recruited by the Crown Prince, Dorian, to fight in the battles to become the King's Champion. Like the cover says it is a mix of The Hunger Games meets Game of Thrones, which is what really drew me to the story. Then I got to meet Sarah J. Maas at YallFest a couple years ago and that only increased my interest in the book. The story is set in an era of kings and queens, and criminals are set to fight for the title of Champion. But that's not the only danger hiding in the castle, these contestants are being killed one by one by a monster roaming the castle.

Sarah J. Maas really brought this word to live in her characters and the settings. Overtime she described a room or an event I felt like I was really their with the characters. She did an amazing job describing the characters and developing different personalities for each, which is a hard task to pull off sometimes.

This was a gripping story from page one where we meet the firecracker assassin Celaena in Endovier has a slave in the coal mines. She is swept away from that life by two men, Crown Prince, Dorian, and Captain of the Guard, Chaol. Both every charming guys!! But I was Team Chaol from the very beginning. I loved the witting banter between them. Can't wait to see where their relationship ends up in the next book. Now don't get me wrong Dorian is pretty great too!

While Celaena is training to become the King's Champion, a monster is let loose in the castle, which adds a great twist of mystery to an already amazing book. We get to learn about the ancient Wyrdmarks, symbols used for powerful magic. We also come to learn that magic has been erased from the kingdom. Or has it?

There were so many twists and turns throughout this book it had me constantly hooked. I didn't want to put it down. I would find myself reading pages at work just so I could see what was going to happen to Celaena next. This is definitely going to be a promising series. Ready to start reading book two right after I read The 5th Wave!

This is a must read of 2016!!
